Help! Why You Need a Coach, Part 1

“When I was younger, so much younger than today

I never needed anybody’s help in any way

Now that these days are gone I’m not so self-assured

Now I find I’ve changed my mind, and opened up the doors.” – The Beatles

For those old enough to remember this classic Beatles tune, the name of the song is “Help.” Which leads to a question: Who would have thought the Beatles would be a forerunner of today’s business coaches?

Well, maybe not exactly … but the song certainly describes feelings experienced by many of today’s business leaders! Where to turn, especially when you're not feeling so self-assured?

You’re a family member who owns a business – you’re expected to lead the company. Your surname is identified with the family enterprise - you feel an obligation.

The organization has done OK, but you sense that things need to change. Sometimes the pressure is overwhelming. A changed economy, the “Great Resignation,” inflation and the beginnings of recession, all boost your stress level.

Other business leaders appear successful and happy. You don’t feel that same - at least, not very often. Why?

The fact is, those successful people you look up to as business role models are not doing it alone. Most have help. Many have hired at least one mentor or coach to help achieve their goals and aspirations. Even the coaches hire coaches to help guide their businesses!

So quit going it alone - hire a mentor or business coach!

If you are starting your journey in business, hire a mentor to help with the decision-making process. If you are an experienced executive, consider hiring a coach to provide a second set of eyes, which can challenge your thinking.

The fact that your business coach has already “been there and done that” helps align your purpose and objectives. You should run the business, not the other way around.

If you've realized you could use a guide, mentor or coach, feel free to contact me. Let's start the conversation. It's OK to ask for “Help!”
